On My Front Porch

This is a Giant Root Borer. The kids found it on our front porch. Here is a better picture from a bug guide. The one on the porch was about 2" long. Just enough to make me realize that even though this guy is not dangerous, my imagination does all the work and he is lethal!

And yes, we collected the specimen, and identified him using a field guide. We are a home school family, of course!

Now I did make sure that the lid was secure on the jar...just in case!

If I ever come to visit you, I'm coming in the back door! :D
I believe our imaginations run in the same gear!

Back door is just as frightening...guess I should take more pictures. As you can see I did not focus the camera too well, as this gigantic freak of nature really got the best of me!

We have a black widow spider caught between the window and the screen in the office window. Tried to take a picture, but with the screen it didn't turn out good enough to post. Since it's trapped its no threat but I think we'll take the bug spray out and take care of it just in case.

I have a close friend who was bite on the leg by a brown recluse spider and literally lost a hunk out of her leg and still has trouble with it.

Susan spiders are so terrible. This guy poses no threat except to the mind!

Just seeing it - makes one feel - the mind working overtime !!

A scary thought of it lurking around somewhere ...

Must admit it is a good field study for your kids - as long as it of course kept in the jar...

ROFL!! That thing just creeps me out. I'm glad I have boys that can deal with creeping things like that :-)

Ew!! He is an ugly little guy isn't he??? I love how you used the guide to identify him, though!! When I was a kid I had a guide to trees from the Autobon (sp?) Society and I would ride my bicycle around the neighborhood and collect leaves to identify. Good memories, even though I kind of cringe at what a goober I must have looked like!!=)
